The title of this article is true but at the same time not true. It is not true in a sense that the best QB's that run the read option are mobile QBs (Kaepernick, RG3, Wilson, Newton, etc) but it is untrue with who exactly is running the system in preseason so far, and very well might I add. Nick Foles and Matt Bakley have been put into the read option system this preseason and have run it extremely well, Foles has used it to get receivers open and deliver PA Option passes, but at the same time he has pulled and run for some good plays. Now the question is does your QB have to be able to run in order to do the option? The answer as of right now is undecided but from what Barkley and Foles have done with it, it isn't just a run or pull and run system. You can do a boat load of things with it for example when Foles pulled the option from Polk, he rolled left but instead of running, he pitched it behind him to Avant for the 4 yard gain. This system as of right now is still a dominant one and it is being used by all kinds of quarterbacks including the guys in Philadelphia which could show that if Chip Kelly does choose Foles or Barkley as the starting QB, the read option will not be going away from the playbook.
